He started as a painter but then quit painting to further the cause of constructivism and avante garde. He was a very diverse individual with a sense of humor. With his humor, he did a lot of work in serving the Russian Revolution. He used a lot of photography, and by so doing he created the photomontage technique. Along with the photomontage, he used a lot of sans serif type, heavy rules, and, like Lissitzky, diagonal grids.
